Climate Control

Climate Control is all the rave in today's self-storage market.  However, most people do not need or require climate controlled units. That is, humidity control is the main reason people seek climate controlled units. Some of the effects of humidity include:
bulletThe most obvious effect humidity has is rust. Metals need moisture to oxidize and corrode. As humidity exceeds 60%, the rate of corrosion increases dramatically - even a 10% rise in humidity may double the rate of corrosion.
bulletMolds germinate and grow in the presence of moisture. When humidity exceeds 60%, molds are able to grow quickly.
bulletMildew is a microorganism that grows quickly in humid environments. Though not dangerous, it can damage fabric, wood and paper over time. Mildew also gives off an unpleasant odor. Like molds, mildew cannot grow in humidity below 60%.

Additionally, mold and mildew require temperature above freezing to thrive.

Murphy's has accounting offices and Antique Dealers who have, for years, successfully used traditional storage without humidity related problems. Most of whom use products like Dri~it and Damp Check to combat humidity during the damp months of the year. One should be warned, however, that while proper preparation of your stored items (see Do's & Don'ts) will help prevent these problems there is still some risk. If that is a risk you are not willing to take climate/humidity controlled unit may seem priceless if you are storing IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS, ANTIQUES, ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT, CLOTHING, OR FURNITURE (or anything else that could be damaged by moisture). With units that are heated in the winter and cooled in the summer, your belongings will weather the most extreme conditions. Stop bye Murphy's Today for more information.
